Heartbeat Issue #15 - Milestone Weekend at MKO

Welcome to Heartbeat Issue #15 for the 2026 Season.
Last Saturday morning started with heavy fog across Mike Kenny Oval. We had 3 games scheduled at home for the catch-up wet weather round. The fog lifted just before the kick off for our first game of the day, with it turning into a fantastic day for football.

The day started with a great win by our Women's Division 3 Team against Sydney Uni, who were running second on the ladder. The second game was a top of the table clash in the Men's U19's Division 2 against Manly Waringah, with a narrow loss in a high quality game.

The third and final game for the day was our undefeated Masters playing against the Southern Dingoes. This game celebrated two huge milestones for two of our club stalwarts Kieran Wright (350 Games) and Sebastian Parker (300 Games). The game itself resulted in a fantastic victory by the team, maintaining their undefeated season so far. Congratulations to both Kieran and Seb on achieving these major Club milestones.

Next week sees our teams returning home to MKO to compete against various clubs for Round 13, including our Men's Division 5 playing at home on Friday night. Our Men's Premiers will play the Inner West, and our Women's Premiers against Parramatta.

Some changes have occurred to timings for games, so please check all game schedules and timings.

See you down at MKO.

Go D's.

Match Report

The Masters Men celebrated two remarkable club milestones in style, producing a commanding 61–17 victory over the Dingoes in a memorable afternoon for Kieran "Kiz" Wright and Sebastian "Sebby" Parker.

The Demons set the tone early, keeping the opposition scoreless in the opening quarter before gradually extending their lead through disciplined team football. A dominant third term proved the difference, with Penno piling on five goals while restricting the Dingoes to a solitary behind to put the contest beyond doubt.

It was fitting that both milestone men featured prominently in the victory. Kieran Wright celebrated his 350th game with a best-on-ground performance, while Sebastian Parker marked his 300th game in typical fashion, leading from the front and earning a place among the side's goal kickers.

Shaun Mulcahy was influential throughout the day, with Tommy Angel, Nathan Rayment and Scott Mitchell all making important contributions across the ground in another well-rounded team effort.

Congratulations to both Kiz and Sebby on reaching extraordinary milestones in the red and blue. Between them, 650 games is a phenomenal contribution to the Pennant Hills Demons, and their commitment, leadership and dedication to the club over so many years are a testament to what makes our football club so special.

A dominant team performance made for the perfect way to celebrate two club legends, with the Masters continuing their strong form and adding another important win to the season to continue their undefeated run.

Match Report

Another crisp winter's morning brought a slight chill to the start of the day. As most of us arrived at the legendary Mike Kenny Oval, a couple of thoughts crossed everyone's mind: "Where are the goals?" and "Will we even be able to see the footy?" The thick mist rolling across MKO created an eerie, unfamiliar backdrop that wasn't particularly welcoming.

With our intrepid coach Todd away on representative duties in Queensland, coaching responsibilities fell to Wilko. What a privilege it was to spend the day with this legendary group in their own competition. Opportunities like this don't come around often, and there were certainly some big shoes to fill.

Q1 – It Is Time
A classic Wilko warm-up, followed by a quick possession drill to switch the group on, had everyone ready to go. We came out hungry and with genuine intent. Putting together a side is never easy. Add wet weather, a merry dance of player movement and rule interpretations, and an opposition determined not to lose, and we certainly had our work cut out for us.

The opening quarter belonged to the Divvies. Our forward-half pressure was outstanding, and possession must have been close to 75%. Rolling through our key themes, we controlled the ball at source brilliantly, earning ourselves a perfect 10/10. Our purposeful use of the football through the next phase created consistent forward momentum, another 10/10, while our commitment to treasuring possession eventually produced the reward it deserved—a behind followed shortly after by our opening goal.

Pennant Hills 1.2 (8)
USYD 0.0 (0)

Q2 – Wake Up
USYD responded strongly. Our control at the source dipped slightly and our opposition began putting together passages of play that suggested they weren't about to accept the first quarter's outcome. To our credit, the girls fought back. Rotations settled us and we gradually wrestled the contest back onto our terms, although not before USYD managed a behind for their efforts. Lucy provided outstanding leadership across the backline, organising her teammates while absorbing repeated pressure. Emma's football IQ, ability to read the play and remarkable courage ensured our defensive structure remained composed whenever USYD threatened.

USYD 0.1 (1)

Half Time – Check In
Half time provided an opportunity to reflect. What were we doing well? What should we stop doing? The feedback across the group was overwhelmingly positive. The vibe was strong, confidence was building, and together we re-grounded ourselves in our three program themes. We also reinforced what is quickly becoming a fourth theme across the program: Bring the GRRRR.

Q3 – Super Play
The Divvies settled beautifully into the contest. They refused to rush their football, and our developing style of play became increasingly evident through our decision-making. Excellent handball chains, composed lateral movement and well-weighted 45-degree kicks allowed us to move the ball with confidence and purpose. Around the contest, the girls brought the GRRRR. Increased confidence attacking the aerial contest allowed us to win possession more consistently, while relentless forward-50 pressure resulted in another three scoring shots. Zoe rotated impressively between half forward and the ruck alongside Jemima. Together they helped us maintain control at the source, giving our midfield time and space to execute the next phase and continue treasuring possession.

Pennant Hills 2.4 (16)
USYD 0.1 (1)

Q4 – Not Enough
Despite leading comfortably, there was never a sense that the girls were satisfied. With the match played 14-a-side, the Divvies held a slight advantage through our rotations, but there was a collective feeling that our effort deserved even more reward. Jessica Nagy and Lily Cranwell continued to lead from the midfield, with Lily also spending valuable time forward. Their determination drove the group to keep hunting the contest. Our pressure remained relentless, our composure with ball in hand never wavered, and once again our handball chains and lateral ball movement allowed us to build our own "house" inside forward 50. Two further scoring shots sealed a terrific team performance and ensured the Divvies secured the chocolates.

Match Report

The Men's Under 19 Division 2 fell just short against Manly on the weekend, going down 10.10 (70) to 9.5 (59) in a hard-fought contest.

After trailing at quarter time despite limiting Manly to just one goal, the Demons responded strongly in the second term to edge in front at the main break. The game remained evenly poised before Manly gained the ascendancy with a five-goal third quarter, forcing Penno to chase the game heading into the final term.

To their credit, the Demons refused to go away, kicking three final-quarter goals and continuing to apply pressure until the final siren. Despite the spirited finish, they were unable to bridge the gap, with Manly holding on for an 11-point win.

Josh Strefner led the way with an outstanding performance, while Toby Conway, Cameron Pearce, Lukas Kohlhagen, Lincoln Kellett and Noah Hoffman all made important contributions across the ground.

Lincoln Kellett was the standout in front of goal with three majors, while Toby Conway, Luke Hallam, Zac Irwin, Lukas Kohlhagen, Fraser McKernan and Jethro Penn each added a goal.

While the result didn't fall the Demons' way, the group's resilience and determination were evident throughout the afternoon. There were plenty of positives to build on as the side looks to convert strong patches of football into four-quarter performances in the weeks ahead as we run into the finals.
