ROUND 1 - PENNANT HILLS DEMONS UNDER 19 DIV 1 (14.15.99) defeated SOUTH WEST SYDNEY (0.4.4) – SATURDAY 28th March 2026 BOB PRENTER RESERVE MAQUARIE FIELDS
MATCH REPORT
“Perfect Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance”
Runds 1 is here, and a great day for the U19 Div 1 team with an exciting win to start the season. We have trained so hard for what seems an eternity to get to round 1. The boys were keen and well prepared. After a difficult time around the selection table with some very talented players not getting a spot in the top 22, we went in with a fit and strong line up and more than half the team new debutants for U19 div 1.
Bob Prenter is a big space with room for players who are prepared to do the hard work. In Q1 our tackle pressure was excellent early with Mark and Isaac, and our first forward entry was clean between Dinsmore, Mark and Lackas. Sam at half forward was in it early and kicked our first goal on the run. The linking play between Chapple, Dinsmore, then Will who marked and kicked our second. Henry W was strong and Billy took two strong defensive marks, but it was Sam who dominated for us in the first qtr up forward. There was a 3 goal breeze favoring the northern end early and we were against it, but had all the play in our forward half. We had 8 inside 50s for 3 goals.
Q2 saw Dilan from deep in defence take an opportunity on the run for our first goal. Our defensive craft again was strong with Toby marking and switching the ball on the far side. We had plenty of the ball but were not efficient with our forward entries. We were leading too early, cramping our forward space, and playing some chaotic football seeing the ball caught deep in the dead pockets. We kicked only 2 goals with the wind advantage and then a third goal right on half time – from 13 inside 50s !!. At half time we explained our inefficiencies and wasted efforts. We were effectively winning 50/50s but needed more structured leading patterns and discipline to hold our structures and create more open space for our marking forwards. Too many kicks from low scoring or difficult positions. We could do much better.
Q3 we were against the wind again and kicked a goal in the first minute, linking Ben, Eamon, Lackas, Dinsmore and over to Sam. Dilan and Henry A were strong down back, and Lackas forward tackle pressure superb. Toby down back was clean with his execution. Jack was solid at CHB creating turnover and corridor runs. Great passage of play from Sam over to Mark and kick to Lackas for a goal. Dilan was clean from deep in defence and Henry A was leading the way with tackle pressure. SWS could not break our defence. We had 14 tackles for the qtr, 10 inside 50s and 4 goals. Much better team play. We had adjusted well after half time.
Q4 we switched Jack and Henry A to the mids and were strong with centre clearance. We shared the ball cleanly and opened up the ground to create forward opportunities – this saw goals shared between Dinsmore, Lackas and Sam. We started to see our team craft work well with our zone defence holding the ball in our forward half, holding shape, and giving the first clear option to a running player. We were rewarded for our team craft and delivery to logical goal scoring zones from inside 50 rather than trying to score from deep pockets or outside 50. 10 tackles, 12 inside 50s, 4 goals. 24 tackles in the second half – solid. SWS were not as fit or as structured as we were and the score board reflected the craft on display. An awesome first up result and something to build on as we fine tune our game plan and structures as we prepare for some strong opposition in the coming weeks.
Many players shared the accolades today and it was hard to select our best from an even performance.
Top players included – Henry Williams, Lakas, Dinsmore, Sam, Will A, Mark, Noah Dunn, Billy, Chapple.
Our best were – Noah Dinsmore – had great forward craft and pace off the mark to open them up across half forward. Could have kicked more goals.
Sam Austin – creative and explosive off half forward and kicked 4 goals.
Jacob Lackas – dominated his opposition with his speed, leading patterns and marking – 3 goals.
Josh Chapple – in control from centre clearance and distribution.
Bill Baker – intercept marking and dominance across half back where the opposition could not get past him.
Mark Mifsud – head over the ball and scrambling at ground balls saw him come out on top more often.
Noah Dunn – fit and dominant from wing and had plenty of the ball.
Enjoy the Easter Break, but be prepared to work hard on the training track as we fine tune our game plan for the big round 2 clash against last years premiers Manly.
