We started strong, winning the first hit out and clearance and taking the ball deep into our Forward 50. A couple of shots on goal though we couldn’t get the ball to cross the line. East Coast were tough in defense and after 5 minutes managed to clear the ball to their forwards who were shown plenty of resistance from our defenders before the first score of the game came at the 7th minute mark.
With the new players backing up from last week, and a couple more this week, we played like a team with a few seasons under our belt.
The second quarter was similar, some solid ball movement deep into our forward 50, just couldn’t get it across the line for any type of score. We won plenty of stoppages and got the ball forward, though Eagles defense was tight.
The second half looked a little different. Third quarter we battled strong, with young teens Ava Clegg, Steph Este and on debut Ella Gillard showing steely determination and working in with new guns Kay Bleza and Allanah Pillon to energise the ball from our defence.
A couple of injuries reduced our bench, and by the fourth quarter the legs were worn. The few who played earlier for our Divvies had been some of our fiercest tacklers though looked quite wary after some intense battles and running in the heat of the day. Eagles often getting frustrated by so much resistance, saw one player sent from the field for over zealous conduct.
Conceding 5 goals in the first half of the game and then 5 goals in that last quarter made the scoreboard look a lot more favourable to the Eagles than it actually was on the field.
We battled, we had some deep opportunities around goal, a few long range set shots, and plenty of clean clearances showing the potential of this young team, young in game experience and young in age.
Our captain Amelia Bennett took her game to another level, whilst youngsters Caitlyn Gurney and Ava Clegg really stood up playing some of their best.
Charis Zacharis, Grace Michie, and Ash Grubba were also some of our solid contributors today making the top 6 a very hard task to select.
Players player again a 3 way tie, confirming so many outstanding efforts across the whole team: Caitlyn Gurney, Ava Clegg and Amelia Bennett.
