There were a few nerves early, and the Goannas came out fast, hitting the scoreboard with a goal and a behind. But our girls didn’t blink. We dug in, started to find our rhythm, and began linking up through the middle with some promising chains of play.
At quarter time, we trailed by six — 1.1 (7) to 0.1 (1) — but there was a genuine sense: we’re in this.
Some midfield adjustments saw Sienna and Charlee take on a strong ruck battle, holding their own and giving us first use at the contest. From there, our pressure lifted.
Jemima and Charlotte were immense around the ball, while Nikki and Mollie rotated through to keep fresh legs at the contest. The tackling pressure was outstanding, repeatedly winning us the ball and giving us the platform to attack.
That effort paid off, as we edged ahead by halftime — 2.2 (14) to 1.2 (8).
Time to talk about the backline.
Kate “Deck” Hall was on a mission — intercept marking, strong positioning, and driving the ball back out with intent. Around her, Lucy “Donney” Crean and Kate “Sunny” Crean brought energy and composure, combining rebound with smart decision-making.
Behind them, Tilly “Cocoa” Brown and Georgia (nickname pending!) provided outstanding support, creating a defensive unit that was both aggressive and dependable.
Up forward, our pressure continued to build. While accuracy wasn’t always on our side, we kept the ball locked in our forward half and added to the scoreboard, extending our lead heading into the final break — 2.4 (16) to 1.3 (9).
The final quarter was an arm wrestle.
The Goannas kept coming, but our girls held firm. For a group with many still in single-digit games, the growth in composure and positioning was clear.
Sierra, Alayna and Sophie worked tirelessly on the wings to maintain shape and drive. Rachel and Lily (yes… I do know the difference ?) were fierce at the contest, laying tackles and keeping the ball moving our way.
Up forward, Claudia and Shelby competed strongly, ensuring the ball stayed dangerous inside our 50.
In the end, it was a hard-fought, well-earned win:
Pennant Hills 2.6 (18) def. Parramatta 1.4 (10)
Another step forward.
Another example of what this group is building.
And as always…
just imagine where we can get to when we train together, consistently, as one.
This is just the beginning.
