G’day Demons fans! It’s your spirited mascot, The Penno Demon, here to bring you the highlights from a thrilling showdown against Sydney University at their home ground, the iconic Sydney Uni Number 1 Oval. The energy was electric as our WU20 Penno team took to the field this early May morning, determined to make a statement in this early season clash against top of the table Sydney Uni.
Right from the first bounce, it was clear this would be a tightly contested battle. In the first quarter, Sydney Uni managed to edge ahead with a goal and two behinds, leading us 8 to 1. But fear not, Penno faithful, our squad roared back into contention in the second quarter! With a fantastic goal from Maddison Kernaghan and some precise kicking, we outscored the opposition 11 to 6, taking a slender lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Sydney Uni reclaim the advantage, as they put up 20 points to our 7. Our defense worked tirelessly, but Sydney Uni capitalized on their opportunities to keep us on our toes. However, the Penno spirit is never easily quelled. In a thrilling final quarter, our team demonstrated true grit and determination. With two goals and three behinds, we held Sydney Uni scoreless, showcasing our relentless desire to fight until the final siren. The match wrapped up with a heart-thumping finish, though we fell just short with a final score of Penno 34 to Sydney Uni 34.
A big shout out to our standout players today: Charlotte Denney, Caitlin Gurney, and Sierra Timms, who played pivotal roles in keeping us competitive throughout the match. Maddison Kernaghan was on fire with three goals, while Remy Ally added another to our tally, each showing tremendous skill and tenacity.
This close result is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players. It’s a performance we can all be proud of, and one that builds the foundation for future success. Our team showed resilience, and with this experience under our belt, we’re poised to take on the next challenge with even more determination.
Demons fans, let’s keep the faith and continue to support our team with the same passion they showed on the field today. Onwards and upwards, and as always, Go Penno!
