UTS First goal came from an ugly kick in traffic rolling over their goal line. The backs learnt and maintained goal line coverage from then on, UTS not scoring another goal in the following three quarters.
The girls have developed real belief in each other. A game of 16 v's 16 players would mean space on Trumper oval if we worked to create it. It was great to see the one Penno jumper in to win the ball first at each stoppage. Our outside support in the surrounding ring was in contrast to UTS who typically had three fighting our determined one and so when we secured the ball first and delivered to the outside support we found numbers outside all day. Looking across the ground and seeing our discipline in structure, one and two kicks behind the ball saw it rare for UTS to break through into their deep forward line. If they did our tenacity to win the ball was unmatched. The likes of Emma Dunn, Elise Cox, Maddie McConachie-Dykes and Eliza Michie giving great fight and then drive in and out of our back line.
Quads gave great service as the ruck and with only on field rotations (due to the 16) support across the ground from Lillian and Eliza meant a tough day for these three, but they continued to deliver.
Our best on Ground, Laura O'Connell seemed to be everywhere. Intercepting many UTS drives forward and turning the ball into our attack. Finding space many times and delivering deep into our forward 50. The team have lifted week on week and our roving, ground ball game and quick shots on goal saw us home with a 6-goal win. Lillian Ward played a superb game all across the ground giving us use, space and forward drive. Sophie Pendlebury, our ever-reliable captain, was strong in and out of the contests giving us forward drive, and creating space with lateral delivery when needed. Elise Cox, seems timid, but again bought her fighting spirit and won her one-on-one contests repelling many UTS drives across half back. Up forward Jess, Georgia, Ciara, Louise and Kellie all used their pace to great effect, scoring or involved in our 6 goals.
Welcoming back Lou Fisher and Allison Cauwood added strength and depth to the squad. Bronte has found a role in the mids giving us great drive with her power and calm in confusion.
Well done ladies on the best team game this season. The leadership group are to be congratulated for setting the example and the team for believing and playing our game and maintaining our discipline and structure. This sets us up well for a few tough games over the next few weeks. It was a pleasure today team. Thank you.
