Match Report: MU19D1 PENNO vs SWS – Early Season Showdown at MKO1

Good to see the sun and the boys playing footy after a heavy week of rain. The ground held up well and conditions although heavy under foot were OK. We heard SWS had a few prems players back in U19 so we had to be at our best.

- Q1: Our Penno lads set the tone right from the start, blazing through the first quarter with 4 goals and 3 behinds, leaving SWS scoreless. An early lead of 27-0 had our spirits soaring. Our mids started well with Josh Chapple in good form and kicking our first snap goal. Cooper took a mark from Dinsmore for our second goal. Billy was strong down back who kicked to Eamon then to Lackas for our third goal. We had 3 effective centre clearances, 15 tackles, 12 forward 50 entries and 5 uncontested marks. We were in control. Good work from Eamon early, Mark was in it for his first game back from injury, and chapple, Cooper and Dinsmore were strong!

Q2: SWS attempted a comeback, but our defense held strong. We added a goal and 2 behinds to our tally, while SWS managed to score 14 points. A slight dip, but we maintained our lead with the score at 35-14. Sam was strong on the flank and Bills was solid in defence. Cooper took another mark and goal up forward, and Hugh was really strong on the last line of defence. A great job by our defenders to hold back their forward momentum - Hugo, Henry, Hugh and Billy. only 1 centre clearance for the qtr, 10 tackles, 9 inside 50s and 15 uncontested marks. The wind was dragging the ball to the near side making goal scoring difficult and instructions were to attack from the far side to have a wind behind your back shooting for goal. Unfortunately a lapse in team concentration saw them get a goal late just before half time - we were caught not paying attention, loose players, no talk and ball watching. Wasting hard efforts prior.

Q3: The Demon spirit was relentless in the third quarter as we added another 4 goals and 1 behind to the scoreboard. SWS pushed back with 14 points of their own, but by the end of the quarter, we were comfortably ahead at 60-28. Sam again was clean, giving hands to Ben for a goal. Some great team play from Mark, Eamon, Chapple and Jack English for another goal. Mark scored a goal and another great passage followed from Sam, Mark, Henry, then over to Lackas for a goal. Liam on the wing gave a great chase and tackle, and Chapple was solid and consistent in defence, as was Henry, Hugo and Jack. Centre clearances 5, tackles 6, inside 50s 9, and uncontested marks 9.

Q4: SWS were stronger than round one and challenged us at times. and they scored early in the 4th. They chased and ran us down twice early and were rewarded with a goal for their efforts. However we motored on and continued good play from Hugh down back holding their full forward to little influence, Ben scored 2 goals late in the 4th with some accurate kicking, as we kept in control and distributed well with an increase in the number of our uncontested marks. Centre Clearances 1, Tackes 9, inside 50s 10, uncontested marks 14. Great way to seal the victory with a powerful final quarter performance, kicking 3 goals and 3 behinds. The final siren marked an emphatic 81-29 win for Penno!

Final Score
- PENNO: 12.9 (81)
- SWS: 5.5 (35)

Best Players:
Our standout stars deserve a special mention for their sensational performances on the field. Joshua Chapple, Henry Andrews, and Cooper Smith were absolute game-changers, showcasing their skills and determination. Jack English, Mark Mifsud, and William Baker also played pivotal roles in securing our victory. Loved Hughs efforts down back, Dinsmore had plenty of the ball, and Sam and Ben had influence today.

Goal Scorers:
A shoutout to our sharp shooters: Jacob Lackas and Benjamin Stewart both put up 3 goals each, while Eamon Macauley and Cooper Smith each contributed 2 goals. Jack English and Mark Mifsud added a goal apiece, ensuring we dominated the scoreboard.

As discussed in the rooms, the middle section of the season is when we need to be at our best, as dropping an important game during this period can change the finals race. There are no easy games in Div 1. We now must fine tune and shape our game plan to just improve week to week by small percentages. We remove basic errors and play to a system. I couldn't be prouder of our lads and the fiery spirit they bring to every game is positive and infectious. Special mention to Ryder and Hunter who both performed well in their first games of Div 1 footy.

Let’s continue this momentum going forward as we work hard to climb the ladder. Cheers Kerls
