We are all disappointed that this one got away from us. Unfortunately, they had a couple of quick breaks that they were able to convert. We on the other hand fought hard, dominated possession and territory but could not convert. Our women know that they were the best team on the field. We fight for each other and some of our support play was outstanding. There were many occasions were a handle out the back of the contest created the space. Followed by two quick handballs to a running outside player and we got away. Ladies, some of the passages of play we were able to generate in this game were the best we have all year, well done.
We let them collapse on the inside of the contest and owned the outside today which was really pleasing. When we saw, on a number of occasions, three of them on one of us sprinting out to the wings for the ball is where they got the better of us today. Unfortunately, some periods we did not run with them and allowed them to get out.
Our best on ground, Emma, single handedly, on numerous occasions, killed the ball, stemmed their flow and gave us time to regroup. This was many times a three-on-one contest and Emma won. Today many were played in new positions to help build skill and resilience. It is so pleasing to see this group relish learning and playing for each other. If we had a camera filming, you could have witnessed the most beautiful play from the centre clearance to kick a goal within a minute at the start of the fourth quarter. This is indicative of what this team can do. I love how they show up, love to play for this club week in week out, support Prems and U20's when needed and are so tight as a group on game day.
In her last game as a "Pendlebury" (Getting married) Sophie was again fantastic around the contest an gave us many clearances from stoppages. It is Sophie's skill, run but also her football IQ are important to this team. She leads so well by example and word. Mia was strong in the ruck and has been a great addition to the team. Mia was well supported by Quads, Mollie and Pendles. Maddi, Tiarne, Lou and Claudi all giving great service. Watching Mia charge onto a football from the half back and drive back into attack is a highlight for this squad. She continues to do this and even went forward at one stage to give some drive. Zoe and Amy, both together on the filed must put some fear into the opposition. They both have height, speed and love the contest. Both are now on the record books as goal kickers for the club. Another highlight is Lucy. She is your traditional hard back. She breaks packs, coordinates defence, runs hard and kicks long. What a great game Lucy had, respected by her teammates and opposition for her toughness.
Welcoming back Mikaela this week was awesome. After having a break from football, her marking and kicking were on display more depth for our women. But today was a day for our smaller players. They demonstrated to the team that even the smallest, when they contest, can turn a game. Emma again winning her contests often outnumbered to stem their offensive run and Zippy on thew wing and half forward being first to the ball and not letting the opposition have easy possession.
So, unfortunately, this one got away from us. However, the positives from this game are enormous. In patches we showed we can beat any team in this competition. This bring that energy and support/team play to each quarter and enjoy a great run towards finals.
