Looking at the quarter-by-quarter scores, we were right in the contest all day. We trailed by just 1 point at quarter time and 3 points at half time before producing our best football in the third quarter, kicking 5.2 and taking a 17-point lead into the final
change.
Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain that momentum in the last quarter as Sydney University responded strongly, kicking 5.3 to our 1.1 and ultimately overrunning us by 9 points.
While the result is disappointing, there are plenty of positives to take away. Once again, we proved that we could match it with one of the competitions benchmark sides. Throughout the season, we have shown that when we play our brand of football, we are capable of competing with every team in the league. The challenge now is turning competitive performances into victories.
At this stage of the season, moral victories count for very little. The reality is that we need to become more ruthless in key moments and sustain our intensity for four quarters. Against quality opposition, lapses in concentration, execution and defensive accountability are punished quickly, and that was evident in the final term. The equation for our season is simple.
With four games remaining, we need to win at least three to give ourselves any realistic chance of playing finals football. The
opportunity is still there, but it will require a collective commitment from every player, every week.
We have shown we belong with the competitions best. Now is the time to get serious, embrace the challenge ahead, and ensure our actions match our ambitions.
The next month will define our season. The message to the group is straightforward: believe in our ability, trust the
process, but most importantly, deliver when it matters. Three wins from four games starts now.
