Heartbeat Issue #9 - Round 7 in Review

Welcome to Heartbeat Issue #9 for the 2026 Season.
Last weekend saw all our teams return to the field, with most on the road playing away at various venues across Sydney.

We only had 2 games played at home for Round 7, being our MU19 Division 2 and MD5 teams.

Even though it was a tough weekend for most of our teams with results, there was a couple of major highlights. The MU19D2 secured a come from behind win in their top of the table clash against North Shore, who were unbeaten up until that game. Our Men's Premier Division team also won against Sydney Uni, at Sydney University Oval.

This weekend sees us return home to MKO, with some big games scheduled, including the top of the table clash in the Men's Premier Division against South West Sydney.

Our Men's U19 Division 2, Women's Division 3 and Masters matches have been moved to the wet weather round, following the closure of MKO 2. The Men's Division 5 match has been moved to MKO1 following the Men's Premier Division team.

Please keep an eye on all the communications as to possible further changes to schedules owing to ground closures.

Match Report: MU19D2 Penno vs North Shore

Hello, Penno faithful! It’s your spirited club mascot, The Penno Demon, here with a match report that’s sure to lift your spirits and fill you with pride. Our MU19D2 Penno team took to the field at MKO1 against the top of the table, undefeated North Shore.

The game kicked off in high spirits, with both teams showing their resolve early on. Our Penno boys drew first blood with an impressive 2 goals and 1 behind, totaling 13 points. North Shore was hot on our heels, though, with 2 goals of their own. The quarter closed with Penno slightly edging ahead at 13 to North Shore’s 12.

The second quarter was a seesaw battle, and North Shore managed to push ahead this time, scoring 3 goals and 1 behind to our 2 goals and 1 behind. The team fought valiantly, but we found ourselves trailing by 5 points at halftime, with the scoreboard reading Penno 26 to North Shore 31.

Refreshed and raring to go after the break, our lads continued to press on. Despite some strong efforts from our players, North Shore managed to extend their lead by adding 3 more goals and 1 behind. The third quarter concluded with Penno at 33 against North Shore’s 50.

Quarter 4 is where the magic happened! The final quarter was all about the Penno spirit. Our young guns stormed the field with energy and determination, netting an incredible 5 goals and 1 behind. The defense was tight, and the teamwork was flawless, allowing North Shore only a single goal and one behind. This stunning comeback saw us triumph with a final score of Penno 64 to North Shore 57.

What an exhilarating game it was. Hats off to our best players of the day: Hunter Gaunt, who was an absolute powerhouse, Samuel Condon’s relentless efforts, and Ryder Alley’s unwavering commitment. Special mentions also go to Cameron Pearce, Lincoln Kellett, and Noah Hoffman for their outstanding performances as best on ground.

The goals were aplenty, thanks to the brilliant efforts of Fraser McKernan and Brendan Westwood, each securing 2 goals. Maximus Baker, Harry Burton, Hunter Gaunt, Lukas Kohlhagen, Cameron Pearce, and Ellis Tutty each added to the scoreboard with one goal apiece, ensuring our triumphant victory.

Plenty to celebrate this round, with an epic come from behind win against a team previously undefeated this season. We look onwards to replicate this performance for the rest of the season.

Match Report

G'day footy fans, it's your mate, The Penno Demon, here with the wrap-up of the MD5 clash between our very own Penno and the Wollondilly Warriors.

Final Score:
- Wollondilly: 15.12 (102)
- Penno: 3.4 (22)

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown:
- Q1: Penno 1.0 (6) vs Wollondilly 7.1 (43)
- Q2: Penno 0.0 (0) vs Wollondilly 5.4 (34)
- Q3: Penno 2.3 (15) vs Wollondilly 0.1 (1)
- Q4: Penno 0.1 (1) vs Wollondilly 3.6 (24)

Whilst the scoreboard showed a tough result, the team fought hard and showed plenty of grit, particular in the third quarter where we outscored the opposition. It was great to see the lads putting their foot down and giving it their all until the final siren.

While Wollondilly managed to find the goals more often, our boys never gave up, and that fighting spirit will surely pay off as we move forward in the season. Hats off to our leading goal-scorers Ethan Harrigan, Ryan Jones, and Frazer Renu, who kept the fight alive with some sharp shooting.

A special shoutout to our best players on the day, led by Bill O'Brien whose efforts were relentless. Samuel Crane, Kieran McMurrich, and the rest of our top performers for the match.

We'll take this game's lessons and build on them. It's early in the season, and there's plenty of time for the team to come back stronger in the next round and beyond.

Go Penno.

Match Report

Despite the weather being on the west and cooler side, our spirits were high as we took to the field for this crucial match.

The first quarter saw the opposition come out strong, posting 5 goals and 3 behinds, while our boys were still finding their rhythm. By quarter time, the score was 33 to 0 in favor of UNSW.

As the whistle blew to start the second quarter, it was clear our Penno players were ready to dig deep. Jacob Adams, one of our standout players for the day, managed to snag our first goal alongside a behind, leveling the quarter's scoreline. By halftime, the board read 41 to 8, and while we were trailing, we knew there was plenty of footy left to play.

The third quarter proved a challenging segment with UNSW extending their lead. However, our defense worked tirelessly to contain the damage. At the close of the quarter, the score had tipped further to 63 to 9.

The fourth quarter was where we really showed our mettle. With no goals conceded to the opposition and some slick teamwork, Michael Morris and Jake Protogeros each scored a goal, narrowing the gap. The final siren saw us put up a valiant fight with a quarter scoreline of 12 to 5, though the match ended with a score of UNSW 68 to Penno 21.

While it wasn't the result we hoped for, the learning experience was invaluable. Each game is a stepping stone, and resolve remains unshaken. We'll take the lessons from today and come back stronger for our next encounter.

Match Report: MU19D1 Penno vs Sydney University

The Penno boys braved it out against Sydney University in what was a gripping contest from start to finish, at Sydney University Oval.

Final Score:
- Penno: 7.6 (48)
- Sydney University: 9.7 (61)

The first quarter saw our boys off to a challenging start, with Sydney Uni taking an early lead, leaving us trailing at 7 to 28. However, the team rallied and the second quarter witnessed a fantastic fightback. With sharp precision and relentless energy, Penno outscored Sydney Uni, bringing us back into contention midway with a score of 21 to their 13.

Eamon Macauley’s stellar performance kept the Demon engine running smoothly. As our best on ground, Eamon's determination and skill were unmatched, inspiring his teammates every step of the way. Shout-out to our goal scorers — Noah Dinsmore and Cooper Smith both securing two each, with Leo Bayliss and Eamon Macauley also adding to our tally.

Despite our best efforts in the third quarter, Sydney Uni managed to find the posts more often, extending their lead slightly. Yet, our lads never backed down. The final quarter was a testament to our tenacity, where the defense held strong, allowing only a single behind from Sydney Uni while we added two more points to our own tally.

Though we didn’t bring home the win today, losing by just 13 points, we tip our hats to a hard-fought battle. Every game is a learning experience, and the resilience shown by our players today will be the cornerstone of our future matches this season.

We look onwards now to Round 8 at home. Go Penno.

Coach’s Report – Pennant Hills Demons MD1
Round Match vs Sydney University – 23 May 2026
Best, Patrick Witt, Matt Carey, Lunna Fraser, Kieron Coaldrake, Jack Kinnane, Michael Weathers

First and foremost, full credit to the group for fronting up in extremely tough conditions. It was a cold, wet and miserable night, and we were playing on a ground that is completely different to what we’re used to. Sydney Uni’s oval is tight and compressed — closer to a postage stamp at roughly 130 metres long and just as wide — which is the total opposite of our large, expansive home ground where we play our best footy.

Match Overview
Sydney University 12.8 (80) def. Pennant Hills 5.3 (33)
• Q1: 31 – 0, Q2: 51 – 12, Q3: 61 – 14, Q4: 80 – 33
The scoreboard reflects a tough start, but it doesn’t define the effort and growth the group showed across the night.
________________________________________
What We Did Well: Resilience and Response
After a difficult first quarter where Sydney Uni were able to capitalise on the tight conditions and get the game on their terms, the group responded. We steadied, competed harder, and importantly finished the game strongly — outscoring them in the final quarter, which shows real character.

Adapting to a Different Ground
That smaller ground size compresses space, speeds up the game, and puts pressure on decision-making. It’s not the environment we thrive in, but as the game went on, we began to adapt better — showing composure, improving our contest work, and finding ways to stay in the fight.

Effort and Buy-In
In tough weather and under scoreboard pressure, the effort never dropped. The willingness to compete, chase, tackle and stay connected was there all night, and that’s a huge positive we’ll continue to build on.
________________________________________
Special mentions need to go out to
• Stormy – Flex Player of the Night
Stormy’s ability to adapt on the fly was critical in a challenging game style.
• King – Players Player
Led from the front all night. King brought voice, composure,
• Paddy – Coaches Award
Competed strongly and gave us real presence around the contest.
• Lunna – Impact Player
Lunna stepped up when given a job and kicked two important goals in the second half.
Key Learnings
1. Adapting to Ground Conditions Earlier
Sydney Uni were able to take advantage of the smaller, tighter ground early. We improved as the game went on, but we want to make those adjustments quicker next time.
2. Starting Strong
We were on the back foot from the first bounce. Against quality sides, we need to bring our intensity and intent right from the start — regardless of conditions or venue.
3. Trusting Our Brand (We need to get on board the Div 1 Bus and stop getting off at different stops.)
When we stuck to our nights game plan — contest, pressure, and smart ball movement — particularly late in the game, we saw reward on the scoreboard. That’s the blueprint.

Looking Ahead
The most exciting part is what comes next — we face Sydney Uni again on our home deck, which suits our game style:
Bigger ground, more space to move, Conditions we are comfortable in, Lessons already learned from this hit-out
That shift in environment is significant, and it plays to our strengths.
________________________________________
In Summary
While the result didn’t go our way, there is a lot to like about the resilience, the effort, and the way the group stuck together. Nights like this build toughness and belief. We’ve seen both sides now — the challenge of their conditions and the promise of what we can bring. What was most pleasing was we stuck together after the game and got to know each other a bit better at The Newtown Hotel after, We will be better for all elements of Saturday and Saturday night.

We reset, we learn, and we go again — stronger, smarter, and ready to respond.

Match Report

The team can be very proud of the game they played this weekend for two main reasons. First was the step up in physicality that Hawkesbury bought and how we employed our "assets" and stood up to the barrage. I cannot recall ever seeing such tough clashes over the ball in women's football and in the majority of cases we weathered them and came out with the ball. Secondly, our persistence and tenacity when playing 15 against their full squad rotating off the bench. As coach you cannot be anything other than proud of this group.

We let Hawkesbury dictate the style of game too long to our detriment. There physicality meant they wanted that mauling game around the ball. For some time, we got bogged down kicking the ball down the line, back into the congestion as we did not maintain structure across the ground. This is what cost us today.

The plan was to slow the game a little and play a bit of keeping off when we had the ball. The hope was that this would help preserve legs with no rotations available. This is not easy to do as we had to keep running to open up space and then lead into it to give options to our kicker. The team executed this so well in the second half. In fact, we won the second half possession easily and built many opportunities to peg back the 2-goal deficit. Some fantastic passages of play saw us move the ball out of deep defense to our forward line uncontested. This was some of the best football I have seen this team play. It made it very hard to pick best on ground for the day as many shared the load. Special mention must however go to Quads for her domination of the ruck and second and third efforts across the ground. Sophie Pendlebury continued to run and dodge and drive us forward all day. Louise Carter was courageous and tough and repelled many attacks and stood up to some tough attention. Do not mess with these sisters because Zara and Louise look out for each other. Zara often bought her pace and quick sidestep (that's why she is nicknamed Zippy) to give us the ball back and start our attack. Georgia on the other wing bought the same. These are tough women who did not take a backward step when it would have been easy to do so.

The debutant sisters of Amy and Zoe Fajemisin were a great addition to our back 5, with Sisters Alison and Kelly Cauwood helping to coordinate this excellent grouping. Mia, Maddi and Elise are a powerhouse down back.
What I loved most was players willing to take on new roles and learn the game as they executed. Well done Tiarne, you stepped up enormously today and proved what a sportswoman you are. Ciara held all marks her way today, under some heat, and has built into the excellent dashing forward role. Jess gave us dangerous attacking target and forward pressure all day.

This club has a lot to be proud of with this group. Managing there on-field rotations, willing to take on new roles, the support of each other and no backward step. Some great passages of football. Something special is building. Every Heart Beats True.

Match Report

G'day, Penno faithful! It's your fiery friend, The Penno Demon, here to bring you the hot highlights from the Men's Premier Division clash against Sydney Uni at their Number 1 Oval.

From the first bounce, our boys in red and blue came out firing on all cylinders. The first quarter saw us storm ahead, racking up 5 goals and 4 behinds to Sydney Uni's meager 2 points.

The second quarter was a bit tighter, but our lads kept their composure. We notched up another 3 goals and 2 behinds, while Sydney Uni could only manage 6 more points. Our dominance was clear, and heading into halftime, we were ahead 54-8.

As the third quarter rolled in, Sydney Uni tried to rally, but our defense stood tall. We added another 3 goals and 2 behinds to our tally. The score was now 74 to 22, and energy on the field was palpable.

In the final quarter, Penno was on full display. We sealed the deal with 3 goals and 1 behind to Sydney Uni's 4 points, bringing the final score to a sensational 93-26.

Our best players on ground were Charlie Allison, Angus Lee, Mitchell Blow, Josh Stern, Liam Everett and Stephen Wray.

Our goal scorers brought their A-game, with Nick Hey bagging a solid 5 goals, and Oscar Irwin and Angus Lee each kicking 2. Special mentions to Josh Stern, Darcy Carnahan, Benjamin Lamb, and Maine Vidler for adding to the scoreboard.

Here's to more victories, as we march on to Round 8. Go Penno.
