Heartbeat Issue #5 - ANZAC Day

With ANZAC day falling on a Saturday this year we saw all teams playing on the day this year.
Many of our players and members attended Dawn Services around the city to start Anzac Day before heading to various grounds to compete in this weekend's round.

The weekend commenced with our Men's Div 3 team playing under lights at Mike Kenny on Friday night starting our weekend with a win against North Shore.

Some great results from around the grounds on the weekend, both under 19's teams winning the Women's U20's team winning their 2nd in a row.

And of course, the annual clash in Men's Prems against the Inner West. What a great game with Penno coming away with a big win to retain the ANZAC day trophy.

Details for all games below.

Now we come home for our next round to play against the UNSW club, See you down at the ground.

Under the gleaming lights at 7:30 PM, our young guns burst onto the field and showed everyone what Penno spirit is all about. From the first siren, it was clear who came to dominate. We launched into the game with fire in our bellies, chalking up an impressive 3 goals and 3 behinds to Inner West's 1 goal and 2 behinds, putting us ahead at 21 to 8 by the end of the first quarter.

But we were just warming up! The second quarter was all about Penno precision and passion, as we shut down Inner West entirely, leaving them scoreless while we piled on another 4 goals and 3 behinds. Talk about a powerhouse performance! We took a commanding lead into halftime with a scoreline of 48 to 8.

The third quarter turned into a defensive arm-wrestle; although we couldn't find the big sticks for a goal, our lads kept Inner West from scoring too, maintaining our daunting lead. We added 4 behinds to stretch the scoreboard and entered the final term at 52 to 8.

Just when Inner West thought they might mount a comeback, our boys turned up the heat again. We sealed the match with 2 more goals and 2 behinds. Inner West managed 1 goal and 2 behinds, but it was all too little, too late. The final siren echoed through the night as we celebrated a decisive victory: Penno 66, Inner West 16.

Match Report

ANZAC Day footy away from home always brings with it a certain level of expectation — respect for the occasion, pride in the jumper, and the understanding that nothing comes easy. We were greeted with a beautiful afternoon at Gipps Road Oval, but unfortunately for us, it turned into a long and physically demanding day against what we firmly believe is the benchmark team of the competition.
By the final siren, the scoreboard read Parramatta Goannas 13.16 (94) defeated Pennant Hills Demons 4.3 (27). A tough result, no doubt, but one that provides plenty of lessons as we move deeper into the season.
________________________________________
The Context Matters
Before jumping straight to the scoreboard, it’s important to understand the circumstances of the day.
We stayed with the Goannas until the major break, competing hard and matching them for effort and intent. However, midway through the first quarter we were already down to three available players on the bench, and by halfway through the final term, the bench had completely disappeared. Add to that the draining heat and a large ground, and energy became a precious commodity very quickly.
That’s not an excuse — just reality.
________________________________________
How the Game Unfolded
The first half was exactly what you want in an away contest. We applied pressure, worked hard defensively, and stayed composed for long periods. The backline stood tall, the midfield competed honestly, and we managed to move the ball forward often enough to stay in touch.
After halftime, however, the Goannas lifted — and lifted sharply.
Their pressure around the contest intensified, and as fatigue set in, we struggled to maintain composure with ball in hand. Decision making under heat became rushed, skill execution suffered, and we found it increasingly difficult to move the ball with enough depth into our forward line. On a ground of that size, shallow entries are punished — and Parramatta made us pay.
The heat, the rotations, and the cumulative pressure eventually broke the game open, particularly in the last quarter.
________________________________________
Backline: Outstanding Under Fire
Despite the margin, the backline was exemplary across the board.
They faced repeat entries all day, often under severe pressure, and continued to compete until the final siren. The scoreboard could easily have blown out further without their resilience, communication, and team defence.
Harvey Barrett was outstanding and thoroughly deserved his $50 Player of the Day. His effort never dropped, and he continually put himself in the contest when many would understandably start conserving energy.
Kieron Coaldrake, Jake Condon, and Matt Carey also deserve strong mention for their composure and willingness to compete despite the wave after wave of attack they faced.
________________________________________
Midfield & Centre Line
The centre line battled hard and never shirked the contest, but this game highlighted an area we need to grow.
Under sustained pressure, we struggled at times to adjust quickly enough on the run. Parramatta’s ability to surge, spread, and overlap tested our ability to reset defensively, and that’s an area we’ll be sharpening over the coming weeks.
Henry Toczydlowski, who took home the $50 Flex Player of the Day, showed great intent and competitiveness, and Wilson Mudge, recipient of the $50 Coaches Award, kept working when the game demanded leadership and resilience above all else.
________________________________________
Forward Line Challenges
Up forward, opportunities were limited by the length of the ground and the pressure placed on ball users higher up the field. When we did manage clean entries, we converted efficiently, kicking 4 goals from 7 scoring shots.
Goal kickers:
• Zikman – 1 Boyd – 1 King – 1 HT – 1
The challenge moving forward will be finding ways to generate deeper, more dangerous entries, particularly against high pressure teams on big grounds.
________________________________________
Coach’s Perspective
There’s no sugar coating this — the Goannas are the benchmark, and they showed us what sustained pressure, depth, and polish look like across four quarters.
But there’s also plenty to respect about our effort. We stayed with them early, absorbed pressure for long periods, and continued to compete even when rotations disappeared and legs were burning.
Games like this test belief, resilience, and standards. They reveal where growth is needed — not just physically, but mentally and tactically.
The backline can hold its head high. The midfield knows the work ahead. The forwards continue to look for better connection.
And importantly, the group never stopped.
________________________________________
Final Word
To the players in other grades — this is Div 1 football. The margins are unforgiving, and pressure exposes everything.
To the Div 1 boys — learn from it, own it, and respond.
We’ll review, we’ll adjust, and we’ll be better for it.
Next week is another opportunity.
Up the Demons.
It now clearly calls out:
• our inability to stick to fundamentals under pressure
• the tendency to revert to long 45 metre kicks to contested options
• and, importantly, the message that we need to stay the course moving forward

Match Report

On a significant Anzac Day stage, we took on Inner West in our annual fixture at Croydon Park and delivered a performance that honoured the occasion with both discipline and intent, running out 103-point winners after a dominant final quarter.
The contest was hard-fought early, with Inner West bringing strong pressure around the contest. Our ability to absorb that pressure, particularly through the first half, was critical in setting the game up. A key pillar of that was Mitchell Blow, who was outstanding in a stop-gap role at centre half back. Tasked with containing Ben Zoppo, Blow’s discipline and competitiveness ensured we maintained our defensive integrity and prevented Inner West from generating sustained scoring chains.
After half time, we were able to reset tactically and elevate our execution. The shift in composure and ball use was evident, and it culminated in a devastating final quarter where we piled on 8 goals to none, breaking the game wide open and underlining our ability to put sides away.
Leading the charge was Nick Hey, who produced a best-on-ground performance with a commanding 9-goal haul. His work rate, positioning, and finishing were elite, earning him the Anzac Day Medal, presented by Inner West coach Brent Staker, as well as recognition as Player’s Player.
Across the ground, there were strong contributors in all lines:
Josh Stern hit the scoreboard with 3 goals, providing energy and presence in the forward half.
Oscar Irwin added 3 goals of his own, continuing to impact aerially and at ground level.
Damian Ballard set the tone early with 2 first-quarter goals, lighting the fuse for our forward momentum.
Xavier Russell and Angus Lee both finished with 2 goals, highlighting our ability to generate multiple scoring avenues.
Our midfield and defensive connection was equally influential:
Charlie Allison battled tirelessly in the ruck, finishing with 59 hit outs to give our midfield first use.
Cooper Lee was prolific, gathering a match-high 28 disposals.
Oliver “Wombat” Williams provided relentless drive off half back, consistently launching our transition game.
In total, we had six multiple goal scorers, reinforcing the balance and unpredictability of our forward line.
While the scoreboard reflects a comprehensive result, the foundation was built on resilience, adaptability, and a collective commitment to playing our way. To do that on ANZAC Day, in a traditional fixture against Inner West, made it all the more meaningful.
We now turn our attention to this Saturday, returning to Mike Kenny Oval for our season launch and player auction as we take on UNSW. We encourage all supporters to get down and be part of what promises to be a fantastic day for the club both on and off the field.

Match Report

Great conditions for an Anzac Day clash against Wests at Picken Oval. After Anthony' Woodward's brilliant defence forces speech pre game the boys were ready to go. We started straight out of centre clearance by Dinsmore with a great goal kicked by Ben from deep forward pocket. Tackle pressure was solid early from Cooper Smith and Hugo swung onto his left for our second goal. Nick Price was in good form up forward with a kick forward, Ollie battled and won a second effort contest followed by hands to Eamon for a goal. We spread wide from defence via Leo and Zac. Dinsmore was having a great quarter and Liam soon after kicked his first goal. Bill was marking solidly down back and Noah Craven kicked well to Cooper then to Jack for a clean passage of play. Toby was punching well in the aerial contest down back and then Cooper Smith won multiple contests on centre week for a drive up forward. The quarter finished with 2 more goals - Dinsmore and Nick P for an intercept and goal. 6 goals to 2 in the first qtr. Great start. We were standing too deep at centre bounces and needed to be physically tighter to with the ground balls. Will and Eamon were winning the tap but we could improve more on our centre clearance work. 10 inside 50s, 10 tackles, 4 centre clearances. 41 points to 12. Solid.
Q2 saw more of the same. Tackle pressure was superb from Jack, Cooper and Zac. Cam and Toby were solid down back then a corridor run from Toby to Noah Dunn saw a great forward entry up to Ben. Henry was clean and strong down back, kicked to Noah Dunn, then to Dinsmore for another goal. Will then kicked to Eamon with hands over to Ben for another running goal. Sam was strong in the middle winning clearance to Dinsmore who had a dominant first half, and another goal. Noah Dunn and Ben combined to give Stref a goal. A great 2nd qtr. 15 inside 50s, 9 tackles, 3 centre clearances. Half time score was 10.10.70 to 4 goals.
Qtr 3 great tap work by Eamon to Ben with a quick kick to Dinsmore for a goal. Then came Ollies great run on the far wing for an outstanding goal from 35 out on a tough angle. Fantastic moment for him. Dinsmore and Cooper were dominant again, Dinsmore over to Ollie to Liam then to Stref. The boys were confidently playing corridor footy and moving the ball by hands and feet with precision. Henrys tackle pressure in the third was fantastic and Nick snagged another goal up forward. 9 inside 50s, 7 tackles. 13.13.91 to 4.2.26.
Q4 we continued to drive and piled on another 8 goals for the quarter. Jack had the ball on a string in the final term with forward entry after forward entry. Dinsmore kicked another snap goal from long range, Liam scored goal no 2, Leo was switched to influence No 6 as a defensive forward and found himself on the end of a great pass and kicked his first goal in many years! another magic moment. Eamon kicked a goal, and Cooper kicked another 2. A dominant display - 13 inside 50s, 10 tackles, 3 clearances.
Our boys ramped up the intensity, booting a whopping 8 goals and 1 behind. Inner West managed just a solitary behind. The final siren echoed our triumph with a colossal scoreline of 140 to 27.
Hats off to our goal-scoring maestros! Noah Dinsmore led the charge with a brilliant 5-goal haul, while Cooper Smith was not far behind with 4. Not to be overlooked, Eamon Macauley, Liam Pass, and Nicholas Price all contributed 2 goals each. Single contributions by Ben Stewart, Hugo Abe, Leo Bayliss, Ollie Oldfield, and Josh Strefner rounded off a spectacular scoring spread.

Special mention to our best players of the day: Cooper Smith's on-field leadership was outstanding, Noah Dinsmore's agility, and Jack English's tenacious play were truly commendable. Noah Dunn and Ollie Oldfield were instrumental, while Ben Stewart's forward craft efforts were invaluable.
This is a great confidence booster to our game plan strategies as we prepare for the all important home clash against UNSW next week and a couple of valuable players coming back in Josh Chapple and Jacob Lackas. Lets prepare well on the track this week fellas.

Match Report

Always a challenge finding players over long weekends and having matches scheduled this ANZAC weekend was no different, especially as the draw comes out so close to the season.
Still, after a fair amount of shuffling we put out a team with plenty of Demon power to take on Goannas who are sitting in a very similar situation as us.
Some complacency probably seeped into the first quarter and we gave them a 4 goal start.
Coach has been told she’s been a bit too relaxed with the players so here was her opportunity to talk bold and demand some better efforts and accountability especially from the regular Prem grade players.
Players took it onboard with a much improved 2nd quarter and even better second half, keeping Parra to only 2 goals while we still managed our own forward 50 entries and this week converted one with a well struck set shot from Sophie Pendleberry from 38metres out.
Our Handball efficiency improved with the third quarter reaching. 90%, and an increase in uncontested marks on offense as we moved the ball quickly from our back half.
Superb on debut was Molly Maguire, and some outstanding efforts from Amber Reveley with her tackle pressure in the forward line. Pendles was again an added gem to the midfield working in so well with Amelia Bennett and newcomer Lillie Ward. We got to see some glimpses of just the power and ability that Dani Keller will bring as she learns more in role of Ruck.

Another great learning experience a group with very little gametime together. We will continue to build on areas of the contests we are winning and work towards turning that into scoreboard outcomes.

Our best lead by young star in the making Greta Clatworthy, Sophie Pendlebury, Lillian Ward, Caitlin Gurney, Amber Reveley, Ashleigh Grubba with Greta also being voted best in our Players Player votes.

Match Report

A bright start in more ways than one — early arrival, autumn sunshine, and a group ready to test themselves against an established Goannas U20s side.

There were a few nerves early, and the Goannas came out fast, hitting the scoreboard with a goal and a behind. But our girls didn’t blink. We dug in, started to find our rhythm, and began linking up through the middle with some promising chains of play.

At quarter time, we trailed by six — 1.1 (7) to 0.1 (1) — but there was a genuine sense: we’re in this.

Some midfield adjustments saw Sienna and Charlee take on a strong ruck battle, holding their own and giving us first use at the contest. From there, our pressure lifted.

Jemima and Charlotte were immense around the ball, while Nikki and Mollie rotated through to keep fresh legs at the contest. The tackling pressure was outstanding, repeatedly winning us the ball and giving us the platform to attack.

That effort paid off, as we edged ahead by halftime — 2.2 (14) to 1.2 (8).

Time to talk about the backline.

Kate “Deck” Hall was on a mission — intercept marking, strong positioning, and driving the ball back out with intent. Around her, Lucy “Donney” Crean and Kate “Sunny” Crean brought energy and composure, combining rebound with smart decision-making.

Behind them, Tilly “Cocoa” Brown and Georgia (nickname pending!) provided outstanding support, creating a defensive unit that was both aggressive and dependable.

Up forward, our pressure continued to build. While accuracy wasn’t always on our side, we kept the ball locked in our forward half and added to the scoreboard, extending our lead heading into the final break — 2.4 (16) to 1.3 (9).

The final quarter was an arm wrestle.

The Goannas kept coming, but our girls held firm. For a group with many still in single-digit games, the growth in composure and positioning was clear.

Sierra, Alayna and Sophie worked tirelessly on the wings to maintain shape and drive. Rachel and Lily (yes… I do know the difference ?) were fierce at the contest, laying tackles and keeping the ball moving our way.

Up forward, Claudia and Shelby competed strongly, ensuring the ball stayed dangerous inside our 50.

In the end, it was a hard-fought, well-earned win:
Pennant Hills 2.6 (18) def. Parramatta 1.4 (10)

Another step forward.
Another example of what this group is building.
And as always…
just imagine where we can get to when we train together, consistently, as one.

This is just the beginning.
