Heartbeat Issue #8 - Representative Round

Welcome to Heartbeat Issue #8 - Representative Round.
Last weekend was our Representative Round, meaning a reduced number of club games being played over the weekend.

Firstly, a big congratulations to our players that were selected to play in the AFL Sydney Representative side against Canberra. All of our Premier Men performed well on the big stage, and we are very proud to have them representing the Club at this level.

Congratulations to Mitchell Blow, Josh Stern, Cooper Lee & Nick Hey.

With the Club's top teams resting owing to the Rep Round, our club's remaining teams played away for the round. There were some fantastic results from the weekend. Scores and reports can be seen below.

A special mention to our Women’s Under 20’s who came away with a draw against the top of the table Sydney Uni (1) team on their home ground. Also, a big top of the table game for our Masters team against Balmain, with our Masters Men coming away with a 34 point win.

The upcoming weekend sees only the Men's Division 5 and the Men's U19's Division 2 playing at home, with all other teams playing away this weekend.

Please check the game schedule for times and locations of games, and get out and support our teams.

Go D’s.

Match Report

G'day, Demon fans! It's your friendly neighborhood mascot, The Penno Demon, here to give you the latest scoop from Picken Oval where our mighty MD5 Penno team took on the Inner West.

The atmosphere was electric right from the first bounce as we ended the first quarter slightly behind with a score of 1.3 (9) to Inner West's 2.1 (13).

In the second quarter, it was a tightly contested battle, with our boys tirelessly pushing forward but only managing to add four points from behinds to our tally, as Inner West edged ahead 4.0 (24). At halftime, the score stood at Penno 1.7 (13) to Inner West's 4.1 (25).

The third quarter saw our determination shine through with Daniel Crompton and our defensive line, including Lachlan Flower and Jack McDonald, preventing Inner West from running away with the game. We added another goal and two behinds to our score while holding Inner West to 1.3 (9). With the scoreboard reading Penno 2.9 (21) to Inner West 5.4 (34), we knew the match was far from over.

And then came the final quarter. Our boys stormed back with a sensational display, piling on five goals and a behind, while our defense kept the Inner West to a solitary behind. A brilliant team effort that showcased our resilience and teamwork! The final siren sounded with Penno triumphant at 7.10 (52) to Inner West's 5.5 (35).

Hats off to our goal scorers — Jack McDonald, what a superstar with two crucial goals, along with Daniel Crompton, Ethan Harrigan, Michael Morris, and Geir O'Rourke. And let's not forget Frazer Renu chipping in with a vital goal to seal the win.

Special mentions to our best on ground: Daniel Crompton, Lachlan Flower, Jack McDonald, Geir O'Rourke, William Engelman, and Harry McDiarmid.

We look forward to carrying this momentum into the next game.

Until next time, Go Penno.

Match Report

The morning saw a cool day in the shade but warm in the sun with plenty of dew on Trumper Oval. With numbers (16 on 16) evenly matched and on UTS home territory we knew we would have a challenge all day. Trumper oval gives no leeway for turn overs being so short. We needed to be first to the ball and run in support of each other, maintain ball security and structure discipline.
UTS First goal came from an ugly kick in traffic rolling over their goal line. The backs learnt and maintained goal line coverage from then on, UTS not scoring another goal in the following three quarters.
The girls have developed real belief in each other. A game of 16 v's 16 players would mean space on Trumper oval if we worked to create it. It was great to see the one Penno jumper in to win the ball first at each stoppage. Our outside support in the surrounding ring was in contrast to UTS who typically had three fighting our determined one and so when we secured the ball first and delivered to the outside support we found numbers outside all day. Looking across the ground and seeing our discipline in structure, one and two kicks behind the ball saw it rare for UTS to break through into their deep forward line. If they did our tenacity to win the ball was unmatched. The likes of Emma Dunn, Elise Cox, Maddie McConachie-Dykes and Eliza Michie giving great fight and then drive in and out of our back line.
Quads gave great service as the ruck and with only on field rotations (due to the 16) support across the ground from Lillian and Eliza meant a tough day for these three, but they continued to deliver.
Our best on Ground, Laura O'Connell seemed to be everywhere. Intercepting many UTS drives forward and turning the ball into our attack. Finding space many times and delivering deep into our forward 50. The team have lifted week on week and our roving, ground ball game and quick shots on goal saw us home with a 6-goal win. Lillian Ward played a superb game all across the ground giving us use, space and forward drive. Sophie Pendlebury, our ever-reliable captain, was strong in and out of the contests giving us forward drive, and creating space with lateral delivery when needed. Elise Cox, seems timid, but again bought her fighting spirit and won her one-on-one contests repelling many UTS drives across half back. Up forward Jess, Georgia, Ciara, Louise and Kellie all used their pace to great effect, scoring or involved in our 6 goals.
Welcoming back Lou Fisher and Allison Cauwood added strength and depth to the squad. Bronte has found a role in the mids giving us great drive with her power and calm in confusion.
Well done ladies on the best team game this season. The leadership group are to be congratulated for setting the example and the team for believing and playing our game and maintaining our discipline and structure. This sets us up well for a few tough games over the next few weeks. It was a pleasure today team. Thank you.

Match Report

G’day Demons fans! It’s your spirited mascot, The Penno Demon, here to bring you the highlights from a thrilling showdown against Sydney University at their home ground, the iconic Sydney Uni Number 1 Oval. The energy was electric as our WU20 Penno team took to the field this early May morning, determined to make a statement in this early season clash against top of the table Sydney Uni.

Right from the first bounce, it was clear this would be a tightly contested battle. In the first quarter, Sydney Uni managed to edge ahead with a goal and two behinds, leading us 8 to 1. But fear not, Penno faithful, our squad roared back into contention in the second quarter! With a fantastic goal from Maddison Kernaghan and some precise kicking, we outscored the opposition 11 to 6, taking a slender lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw Sydney Uni reclaim the advantage, as they put up 20 points to our 7. Our defense worked tirelessly, but Sydney Uni capitalized on their opportunities to keep us on our toes. However, the Penno spirit is never easily quelled. In a thrilling final quarter, our team demonstrated true grit and determination. With two goals and three behinds, we held Sydney Uni scoreless, showcasing our relentless desire to fight until the final siren. The match wrapped up with a heart-thumping finish, though we fell just short with a final score of Penno 34 to Sydney Uni 34.

A big shout out to our standout players today: Charlotte Denney, Caitlin Gurney, and Sierra Timms, who played pivotal roles in keeping us competitive throughout the match. Maddison Kernaghan was on fire with three goals, while Remy Ally added another to our tally, each showing tremendous skill and tenacity.

This close result is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players. It’s a performance we can all be proud of, and one that builds the foundation for future success. Our team showed resilience, and with this experience under our belt, we’re poised to take on the next challenge with even more determination.

Demons fans, let’s keep the faith and continue to support our team with the same passion they showed on the field today. Onwards and upwards, and as always, Go Penno!

Match Report

G'day, loyal Penno fans! It's your favorite mascot, The Penno Demon, here to give you the lowdown on our recent clash against Balmain at the scenic Rozelle Parklands. Though the result wasn't quite what we hoped for, there's always a silver lining and lessons to be learned for our future triumphs.

In this early-season skirmish, our mighty Penno MD3 lads showed plenty of heart but fell short with a final score of 30 to Balmain's 75. Let’s break it down quarter by quarter.

Quarter 1 our boys came out firing with goals from Cameron Akhurst and Adam Nixon, getting us an early lead of 13 to 9. We started with the right energy.

In the 2nd quarter, Balmain shifted gears, but our defense held strong with Rowan Love leading the charge as one of our best players. Despite Balmain scoring 22 to our 2, the Penno spirit never wavered.

Quarter 3, and Jonathan Moran kicked a beauty, keeping our hopes alive as we added 8 points to our tally. Balmain edged ahead with 15, but the contest was intense.

With Cameron Akhurst adding another goal to his tally, we fought valiantly, but Balmain's 29 points proved too formidable this time. However, the effort put forth by Pat Witt and Tino Manfre in the fourth was truly commendable.

Rowan Love, Pat Witt, and Tino Manfre stood out with their exceptional performances, and our goal scorers, Cameron Akhurst, Jonathan Moran, and Adam Nixon, showcased their prowess upfront.

Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to improve, and the learnings from this match will fuel us for future rounds. The passion and determination shown by our players were second to none, and I have no doubt our Penno MD3 team will bounce back stronger next week.

Onwards and upwards into next week! ??
