Heartbeat Issue #20 - Home, History & Heartbeat

Welcome to Heartbeat Issue #20 for the 2026 Season.
Last weekend saw us play our last home round of the year, with all teams except our Men's Under 19 Division 2 playing at MKO.

With all ten of our teams playing, we finished Round 17 with 7 wins. We now have one more home and away round to play before we settle in for the finals. The Men's Premier Division had a big win against our local club rivals the East Coast Eagles to retain the Pops Quintrell Shield for Season 2026.

Our Club Development Pathways are strong with both the Men's U19 teams making it through to the finals, as well as our inaugural Women's U20s team. Our Men's Premier Division, Division 3 and of course, our undefeated Masters are all through to the finals. Our Division 1 Men and Women's Division 3 are still in the mix for a finals spot pending results this weekend.

All results and reports for Round 17 are below.

Last weekend we also held the highlight event of the year for our Club - the Past Players & Club Legends Day. What a fantastic day this was for all involved. It was great to see so many past players and club officials turn up for the event. As was said on the day, "Nobody does it better than our Club".

I hope all enjoyed themselves at this great event. It is the legacy of our past players and officials who have created the great football club we have become. I would like to acknowledge and thank Tommy Angel and Tim Wales for bringing this event together, Robbo for doing a brilliant job as the MC, John Acheson our Club Historian and our communications and media manager Alicia Sparks. To all involved, well done.

This weekend is the last round of home and away games, with most teams playing against North Shore away from home.

With the wet weather we have had, and more to come, please check game schedules to ensure no changes have occurred.

Go D's.

Match Report

It was a difficult match for our Men’s Division 5, with the Demons going down to Penrith 17.6 (108) to 0.1 (1). Penrith came out of the blocks strongly, putting scoreboard pressure on early and controlling much of the first quarter. The Demons were unable to convert their opportunities into scores, with Penrith taking a 39-point lead into the first change. The second quarter followed a similar pattern, as Penrith continued to move the ball well and find ways through the Demons’ defence. Pennant Hills fought hard to stay in the contest, but were unable to find the scoreboard, with Penrith extending their lead to 63 points at half-time. To the Demons’ credit, the intensity and effort continued after the main break. Pennant Hills registered their only score of the afternoon in the third quarter, but Penrith continued to build on their advantage and took an 87-point lead into the final change.
The final quarter saw Penrith add another 20 points to finish with a convincing 107-point victory.

Match Report

Despite going down by nine points to Camden on Saturday, there was plenty for our group to take away from what was a highly competitive contest against one of the benchmark teams of the competition.

When we met Camden earlier in the season, we were beaten by nine points in a low-scoring affair, managing just 42 points for the game. On the weekend, we again fell short by nine points, but the growth in our group was clear for everyone to see.

Against a side that will likely finish equal top of the ladder, we increased our scoring output significantly, kicking 11.6 (72) and pushing one of the competitios best teams right to the final siren.

The most pleasing aspect was our hardness around the contest and our commitment to sticking with our game plan. Even when Camden opened a lead through the middle stages of the game, the players never stopped believing in what we were
trying to achieve. We challenged them physically, continued to compete, and put ourselves in a position to launch a genuine comeback.

At three-quarter time we trailed by 21 points, but the group showed tremendous character in the final quarter. We rallied strongly, kicked 3.1 to 1.1 in the last term, and had Camden under pressure right up until the final siren. We were 95% there this week. The effort, commitment and belief were outstanding, and against a side of Camden's quality that nearly got the job done.

The lesson for us is simple. Against benchmark teams, there is no room for lapses. The best sides stay switched on for 100% of the contest, and that's why Camden sit where they do on the ladder. Our challenge is to bring that same focus and execution
for every minute of every quarter because we have shown we are capable of matching it with the competitions best.

The exciting part is that our finals hunt remains very much alive. We now face a must-win game against North Shore this weekend. Earlier in the season, with a severely depleted list, we pushed North Shore all the way and were unlucky not to
come away with the four points. With the progress we have made since then and the football we have played over the last few weeks, we know we have every reason to be confident.

The message is clear: continue to trust the game plan, bring the same hardness and intensity, and ensure every player is switched on for the entire contest. If we do that, well give ourselves every opportunity to beat North Shore and keep our finals aspirations alive.

We're close. Very close. Now it's time to take the final step.

Match Report

Men’s Premier Division put together a dominant performance against East Coast Eagles, running out 112-point winners, 22.13 (145) to 5.3 (33).

The Demons set the tone from the opening bounce, producing a strong first quarter to take a 34-point lead into the first change. The pressure continued through the second term, with Pennant Hills adding another 33 points while holding East Coast to just two behinds. At half-time, the Demons had established a commanding 65-point advantage.

There was no let-up after the main break, with the Demons continuing to control the contest and move the ball effectively. Another five goals in the third quarter extended the margin beyond 80 points, before the boys finished strongly in the final term with a further five goals to run out 112-point winners.

Skipper Mitchell Blow led from the front in a standout performance, finishing the afternoon with an impressive eight goals. His contribution was complemented by Oscar Irwin, who finished with four, while Liam Everett and Josh Stern both added two goals each.

There were plenty of strong individual performances across the ground, with Mitchell Blow, Cameron Este, Oscar Irwin, Liam Everett, Michael Carroll and Zac Elliott named among the Demons’ best.

The result also saw the Demons retain the Warren ‘Pops’ Quintrell Shield, adding another important chapter to the rivalry with East Coast. The Shield is a great recognition of the history and connection between the two clubs, making the strong team performance and emphatic win even more meaningful.

It was a comprehensive performance across all four quarters, with contributions right across the ground and a strong defensive effort restricting East Coast to just 33 points.

A great day for the group, and a particularly impressive performance from our skipper. Eight goals from Mitch, 145 points for the team and the Warren ‘Pops’ Quintrell Shield staying at Pennant Hills.

Match Report

A polished performance from Men’s Under 19 Division 1 saw the Demons account for East Coast 14.13 (97) to 3.3 (21) in a convincing 76-point victory.

Pennant Hills took control early and never looked back. The boys dominated territory in the opening term, creating plenty of scoring opportunities and putting the East Coast defence under sustained pressure. While the scoreboard could have been even more flattering given the 2.7 return, the Demons finished the quarter with a 19-point lead and plenty of momentum.

The second term saw the Demons begin to capitalise on their opportunities, adding four goals to push the margin out to 39 points by the main break. Importantly, the boys continued to work hard without the ball, restricting East Coast to just one goal across the first half.

East Coast managed to find a little more space in the third quarter, but the Demons remained in control. Three goals helped Pennant Hills extend the margin to 44 points heading into the final term, setting up an opportunity to finish the afternoon strongly.

And finish strongly they did. The Demons produced their best attacking quarter of the match, piling on five goals and three behinds to put the result beyond doubt and finish with a 76-point win.

Henry Williams, Joshua Chapple, Noah Dunn, William Baker, Henry Andrews and Benjamin Stewart were among the standout performers, with strong contributions across the ground.

There was also plenty of reward for effort in front of goal, with Benjamin Stewart leading the way with three majors, while Hugo Abe, Noah Dunn and Eamon Macauley each contributed two. Jacob Lackas, Mark Mifsud, Caleb Parslow, Liam Pass and Cooper Smith also got their names on the scoresheet.

A strong attacking display, coupled with a disciplined effort defensively, gave the Demons control of the game from start to finish.

Match Report

The undefeated Masters continued their outstanding season with another convincing victory, overcoming Sydney Uni by 81 points, 15.12 (102) to 3.3 (21).

The Demons made their intentions clear from the opening bounce, producing a dominant first quarter to establish a 26-point lead. With plenty of pressure around the ground and four goals on the board, Pennant Hills immediately put themselves in the driver's seat.

Sydney Uni responded with two goals in the second term, but the Demons continued to control the contest and added another four goals of their own. At the main break, Pennant Hills had stretched the margin to 40 points and were firmly in control.

The third quarter was another strong one for the Masters, with the Demons adding four goals and three behinds while restricting Sydney Uni to just one behind. With the margin reaching 66 points at three-quarter time, the challenge was to maintain the intensity and finish the job.

The boys did exactly that, closing out the game with another three goals in the final term to record a comprehensive 81-point victory.
There were plenty of strong contributors across the ground, with Luke Bilbe, Kieran Wright, Tommy Angel, Shaun Mulcahy, Simon Lawrenson and Michael Hoareau named among the best. Bilbe and Hoareau led the way in front of goal with three majors apiece, while Tommy Angel, Luke Driver and Nathan Percy each added two.

Most importantly, the result means the Masters remain undefeated, continuing what has been an exceptional season for the group. With every week presenting a new challenge, the boys continue to set the standard for consistency, competitiveness and commitment.

Another win, another strong team performance, and the unbeaten run rolls on.

Match Report

There are games where the scoreboard tells the story. Then there are games where it doesn't.

Against East Coast Eagles, sitting just one place above us on the ladder, we arrived with a quiet belief. The conditions were wet, the football was always going to be difficult to handle, and we had spent the week introducing some new concepts around our ball movement that we were keen to test under pressure. What unfolded wasn't the result we wanted. But there was still plenty to like.

Q1 – Let's Do What We Do
Over the past two months our focus has been deliberately simple. Build the fundamentals. Own the contest. Create habits that become part of our identity. Those habits were tested immediately.

East Coast found the football quicker, moved it into space and repeatedly challenged our defensive structure. Our girls fought hard to slow their movement, but six scoring shots in the opening quarter showed how difficult the task was, even if the Eagles couldn't fully capitalise on the scoreboard. A significant moment came when Cookie (Caitlin) was driven heavily into the ground in a tackle, striking her head and taking no further part in the match. Losing one of your key on-ballers so early is a challenge for any side, but one the group simply absorbed and kept competing through.

Quarter Time
Pennant Hills 0.0 (0)
East Coast Eagles 3.3 (21)

Q2 – Control What We Can Control
Our message was straightforward. Focus on the things within our control. Over recent weeks we've introduced new ball movement principles, encouraging players to look laterally and use 45-degree options rather than simply kicking long down the line. While those patterns are still developing, this quarter showed genuine signs of progress. Time and again we looked to change angles, move into space and create better exits from defence. The coaching group found themselves smiling more than once as we watched players attempting exactly what we'd trained during the week. The scoreboard may not have reflected it, but our football certainly did.

These are the moments where development becomes visible.

Half Time
Pennant Hills 0.0 (0)
East Coast Eagles 4.5 (29)

Half Time – There Is More
Every week this group leaves us believing. Not because of the scoreboard. Because of what sits just beneath the surface.
The improvement over the past several weeks has been remarkable. Skills are improving. Football IQ is growing. Confidence with the ball is building. It genuinely feels like there is another level waiting to emerge. And it doesn't feel very far away.

Q3 – Eagles Respond
East Coast reset well after the main break and again found ways to generate repeat forward entries, creating another six scoring shots. Yet what pleased us most wasn't the scoreboard. It was the response.

Our contest work remained strong. Our defensive exits became more organised. Players continued looking for those new ball movement options rather than reverting to old habits. Against quality opposition, that's exactly the courage we want to see.
Growth isn't abandoning the plan when things get difficult. Growth is trusting it anyway.

Three Quarter Time
Pennant Hills 0.0 (0)
East Coast Eagles 7.8 (50)

Q4 – Us
One word has come to define this group over recent weeks. Us. The effort never wavered.

We found our way into forward 50 and created pressure of our own, but couldn't quite find the reward our work deserved. East Coast added further scores, helped by a couple of fortunate bounces and dribbling footballs that landed their way. Sometimes football is like that. What can't be questioned is the character of this group.

After everything these players have endured throughout the season—the losses, the setbacks, the uncertainty—they continue to turn up, compete for one another and celebrate each other's successes. That says more about this team than any scoreboard ever could.

Final Words
If you had watched this group in Round 1 and then watched them today, you would have seen a very different football team.
The scoreboard won't show that. But we see it every week. We see players who now hunt the contest with purpose. We see ball movement that is beginning to reflect the style we want to become known for. We see footballers making better decisions, communicating more, trusting one another and embracing what we're asking them to do. Most importantly, we see a team that genuinely enjoys being together. The wins will come. Not because we hope they will. Because the foundations are now being built properly. This group has earned the right to keep believing.

So do we. Continue to believe. Train together. Play together. Have fun together.

Match Report

The penultimate game of the season presented another important test for our inaugural Under 20's side. Sitting on the edge of finals, we knew this would tell us plenty about where our group is heading. With a blend of Northwest Lightning Legends, potentially playing their last game for us this year, players who only discovered football this season, and a handful of experienced 100+ game veterans, we had a team that reflected exactly what this program is all about – developing together.

For one of the first times in recent weeks, we exploded out of the blocks. Within the opening minute we had our first major on the board and immediately put USYD-2 under pressure. Our work at the contest was outstanding, although at times we found ourselves crowding the ball and making the next disposal more difficult than it needed to be.

USYD responded well, wrestled back momentum and kicked two scores of their own to level proceedings before edging in front late in the term. Rather than dropping our heads, we answered with another goal inside the final four minutes to ensure the quarter finished exactly where it deserved. An absorbing arm wrestle with neither side able to establish control.

Q2 – Check In
The message at quarter time was simple. We were winning enough football, but we were making life difficult for ourselves by compressing the space around the contest. Better spacing would create better options. With Dusty (Mollie) and Beamish (Amber) leading the way around stoppages, we started finding that extra metre or two of space. Suddenly our ball movement opened up.

The football flowed with purpose, our forwards were rewarded with quality entries, and the scoreboard quickly reflected the shift. Seven scoring shots to none made this quarter completely ours and highlighted just how effective small adjustments can be when everyone buys into them.

Half Time
Pennant Hills 5.5 (35)
USYD-2 2.1 (13)

Half Time – Refinements
The focus at the main break remained exactly the same. Avoid crowding that D1/A1 space around the ball. We spoke about onion rings, concentric circles and the ripples created by dropping a pebble into water—anything that might help visualise the spacing we were after.

Whether it was the coaching message or simply everyone thinking about Shrek ("Ogres are like onions... onions have layers!"), something certainly clicked.

Q3 – Keep Your Space
Our ball winning and transition football reached another level during the third term. Sierra worked tirelessly both through the wing and as an on-baller, linking brilliantly with a midfield group that was beginning to understand exactly where everyone needed to be. Up forward, Stevie (Maddie) and Ned (Sophie) became constant targets, while our movement into attack looked increasingly composed.

Behind the ball, Deck (Kate Hall), Donney (Lucy) and Sunny (Kate Crean) combined superbly to repel repeated USYD entries and launch our rebound game. The most pleasing aspect from the coaching box wasn't simply the six scoring shots—it was seeing our midfield naturally creating those layers around the contest that we'd spoken about all morning. Sometimes learning becomes visible. This quarter was one of those moments.

Three Quarter Time
Pennant Hills 10.7 (67)
USYD-2 3.2 (20)

Q4 – Versatility
With the result largely in hand, we challenged several players to experience unfamiliar roles. Developing footballers isn't just about becoming better in one position. It's about understanding the game from different perspectives. Giving a defender time forward or a winger an opportunity around the ball builds knowledge that eventually makes them better players regardless of where they line up.

Our ball movement continued to create opportunities, and we added another three scoring shots, while USYD-2 refused to give in, finishing with a deserved final goal. They competed until the final siren and made us earn every moment.

Final Words
When this journey began, simply fielding an Under 20's team every week felt like success. Now, one season later, we're knocking on the door of finals. That isn't an accident. It's the result of a remarkable group of young women embracing the challenge, supporting one another and committing to building something bigger than themselves.

This season has never just been about wins and losses. It's been about proving that a genuine pathway can exist—from Northwest Lightning 15's, to 17's, into Pennant Hills Under 20's, and beyond. The foundations are now firmly in place. The future of our women's program has never looked brighter, and plans for 2027 are already taking shape.

We're not finished yet. But whatever happens over the coming weeks, this group has already achieved something special.

Train together. Play together. Have fun together. This is just the beginning.

Match Report

Men’s Division 3 secured a hard-fought two-point victory over Camden, holding on to win 6.8 (44) to 6.6 (42) in a game that went right down to the wire.

The Demons started strongly, taking control of the opening term and creating an early six-point advantage. Camden stayed within striking distance, but Pennant Hills continued to find ways to score in the second quarter, adding 2.4 to take a 20-point lead into half-time.

The game shifted momentum after the main break. Camden came out with renewed energy and put the Demons under pressure, while Pennant Hills could only manage a single behind in the third term. Two goals from Camden brought the margin back to just seven points heading into the final change, setting up a tense finish.

The fourth quarter delivered exactly that. Camden continued to challenge and eventually drew within touching distance, but the Demons held their nerve when it mattered. A crucial goal and two behinds gave Pennant Hills enough breathing room to withstand Camden's late push, securing a two-point victory.

It was a genuine team effort in a contest where every possession and scoring opportunity mattered. Luc White, Oliver Williams, Callum Toohey, Declan Lee, Harry Buckley and Marcus Rickerby were named among the Demons’ best.

Up forward, Josh Mott led the way with three goals, while Matthew Durkin added two and Oliver Williams contributed one.

It wasn't always pretty, but it was a game that demanded resilience and composure — and the Demons found both when it counted. Two points was all that separated the sides at the final siren, but two points was enough.
