Another early afternoon game followed a superb win by our WD3 girls, keeping their finals hopes alive. Could we continue to build on the progress our program has been making?
Q1 – Settle
St George burst out of the first bounce, kicking an early goal as they looked to build the percentage they needed. Our focus had to be on settling into the contest, finding our composure, winning the ball at source and controlling their first movement. Cookie, our ever-dependable runner, certainly earned her stripes early. With a flurry of messages coming from the bench, she delivered every one with style and panache!
While St George's six scoring shots tell one part of the story, they don't tell the whole story. Our girls worked tirelessly to wrestle back control of the contest. Every player contributed defensively, refusing to let St George have easy football. Ava, Remy and Ash showcased their trademark intercepting, tackling and relentless presence, continually denying the Dragons opportunities.

Q2 – Themes
Our three key themes again became the cornerstone of our football. Winning the ball at source allowed us to begin building the next phases of play, and several forward-half entries showed exactly what this group is capable of. We challenged St George around the contest and our pressure began forcing errors. Three behinds were one result, but more importantly cracks were beginning to appear in their on-field behaviour. Their frustration told us we were executing our game exactly as intended.

Half Time – Underline What We Do
Half time was simple. What are we doing well? What must we stop doing?
The answers came quickly because this group understands who we are becoming. Our themes continue to provide an anchor. When we execute them, we produce the football we are striving for. Keep doing what we do.
Q3 – Frustration
We must have been doing something right... because St George's frustration became increasingly obvious. The contest grew physical. There were late hits, unnecessary contact and moments that bordered on spiteful. Our girls met every challenge head on. While we were disappointed that some of that behaviour wasn't managed the way we would have liked, our own emotions inevitably rose as well. One statistic perfectly captured our effort.
St George had:
Q1 – 6 scoring shots
Q2 – 5 scoring shots
Q3 – 4 scoring shots
That relentless defensive effort was something every Demon should be immensely proud of.

Q4 – Signs of the Future
Before the game we spoke about visualising our next phases of ball movement, particularly once we entered our forward half.
Today we saw genuine glimpses of what that future can look like. Our forwards spent much of the day playing close to the contest to help contain St George's movement. But when we successfully transitioned the ball from defensive 50 into attack, those same players were challenged to instantly become attacking threats. This is where our next stage of development begins. As we become better at winning the football, we now learn how to transform defence into attack.
Makayla Nassar was outstanding, becoming one of our key forwards around the contest, creating numbers and continually competing. Makayla Holmes was simply superb. Asked to ruck in a role she doesn't normally play, she embraced the challenge and was outstanding all afternoon. Emma Dunn, one of our four WD3 double-ups, covered enormous ground and was everywhere when we needed her. Jess Nagy, another of our WD3 girls backing up, spent much of the afternoon as an inside midfielder, limiting her direct opponent while repeatedly breaking the ball free and driving us forward.
Despite St George's relentless pressure, we continued forcing poor decisions and inaccuracy, restricting them to five behinds in the final quarter.

Final Words
With only three games remaining, this group of young women continues to achieve something quite remarkable. Every week they walk into contests knowing the challenge that awaits them. Yet they continue to turn up for one another, compete for one another, and represent this football club with enormous courage and pride. What has been built isn't reflected on the scoreboard.
It is reflected in the friendships. It is reflected in the resilience. It is reflected in the belief that continues to grow every single week.
Continue to believe.
Train together.
Play together.
Have fun together.
